ESFRI-roadmap - Final version (19 Oct. 2006)

ESFRI (the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) has just issued " the first European roadmap for new, large-scale Research Infrastructures", based on an international peer-review. The ESFRI Roadmap is the result of an intensive two-year consultation and peer review process involving over 1000 high level European and international experts. As far as e-INIS is concerned, the Roadmap identifies 35 large scale infrastructure projects, at various stages of development, in seven key research areas including Computation and data Treatment, and covers projects such as high power computing services. More information available about this European initiative on the "ESFRI website".

e-INIS: White paper on the Irish e-Infrastructure (Aug. 2006)

This White Paper was submitted to the HEA.

It is input to their review of research infrastructure, defined as follows: In the context of this review, research infrastructure is defined as ‘the tools that provide essential services to the research community for basic or applied research. They may concern the whole range of scientific and technological fields, from social sciences to astronomy, going through genomics or nanotechnologies. Examples include libraries, databases, biological archives, laboratories, clean rooms, communication networks, research vessels, satellite and aircraft observation facilities, coastal observatories, telescopes, synchrotrons, accelerators. They may be "single-sited", "distributed", or "virtual". What we are dealing with are the necessary tools for the future to do research in many areas at the cutting edge’.
